Banca March collaborates with the Palma Aquarium Foundation in a new seahorse release

08 October 2025 Category: Sustainability

  • The “Cavallets de mar Balears” project, a partnership between the Palma Aquarium Foundation and Banca March, has enabled the release of 70 seahorses in Cala Figuera (Calvià) and Cabo Salines (Colònia de Sant Jordi).
  • This initiative helps strengthen wild populations of the two seahorse species found in the Mediterranean Sea, which serve as key indicators of the health of marine ecosystems.
  • The project has been made possible thanks to the charity component of Mediterranean Fund, a thematic equity fund that is sustainable and socially responsible, investing in programmes related to environmental conservation.

Banca March, in collaboration with the Palma Aquarium Foundation, promoted the release of 70 seahorses in Cala Figuera (Calvià) and Cabo Salines (Colònia de Sant Jordi) as part of the “Cavallets de mar Balears” (Balearic Seahorses) project, which aims to prop up the wild populations of these species in the Mediterranean.

The releases, carried out on 1 and 3 October, took place in areas designated as Sites of Community Importance (SCI), ecologically valuable zones that contribute to the restoration of biodiversity and marine ecosystems. This action is part of a marine conservation effort aimed at recovering seahorse populations, which have declined by 25–30% over the past decades.

An initiative totalling over 1,500 seahorses released

On 1 October, the technical team at Palma Aquarium transported 66 common seahorses (Hippocampus hippocampus) to Puerto Portals, and on 3 October, four long-snouted seahorses (Hippocampus guttulatus) including a breeding female to the Port of Colònia de Sant Jordi. From there, they were taken aboard the zero-emission electric sailboat Galaxie Stenella, operated by TrueWorld, with support from the 7 Mares diving centre, which provided the necessary equipment for the operation.

The seahorses, born and raised at Palma Aquarium, had spent between one and one and a half years in a controlled environment until reaching a size of around 12 centimetres, allowing them to face life in the wild with greater chances of survival.

As a result of these two initiatives, the “Cavallets de mar Balears” project has now released a total of 1,518 seahorses into the Balearic Sea.

Mediterranean Fund, a sustainable and socially responsible fund

The “Cavallets de mar Balears” project is made possible thanks to the solidarity component of Mediterranean Fund, a sustainable thematic equity fund managed by March A.M., the asset management arm of Grupo Banca March. This fund invests in two major global growth areas—the ocean economy and the water sector—and allocates 10% of its management fee to environmental and social projects, such as “Cavallets de mar Balears”.

Through this initiative, Banca March reaffirms that sustainability is a core pillar of its Joint Growth model, the foundation of its century-old philosophy. Together with the Palma Aquarium Foundation, the bank strengthens its commitment to sustainability, marine biodiversity conservation, and environmental protection.
