Banca March promotes the creation of a public-private negotiating table on mortgage sustainability

15 February 2024 Category: Sustainability

  • The roundtable has been set up on a permanent basis at the bank's headquarters and is intended to serve as a meeting point between the banking sector and the administration.
  • It will allow the creation of different working groups on specific topics, such as the rescaling of the Energy Efficiency Certificate in Spain or the configuration of a new Sustainability Certificate.
  • This initiative is a further development of the Green ESG Rating, which made Banca March the first Spanish bank to assess the degree of sustainability of mortgage guarantees.

Banca March has promoted the creation of the first roundtable between the public administration and the financial sector, with the aim of debating and reaching agreements that will help to make progress in the area of mortgage sustainability. The roundtable has been set up permanently at the headquarters of Banca March following the agreement reached by the country's main institutions, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda and the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

The members of the roundtable also agree that in the future the topics of debate could be expanded according to the needs of the moment and that different working groups could be created for specific topics, such as the rescaling of the Energy Efficiency Certificate in Spain or the configuration of a new Sustainability Certificate, for example.

This milestone, achieved through Banca March's leadership, represents the continuity of the work initiated by the bank after the creation of the ESG Green Rating, becoming the first bank in Spain to develop a method to globally assess the degree of sustainability in mortgage guarantees, thereby establishing an ESG rating for real estate.

Sonia Colino, Director of Sustainability at Banca March, said: “This initiative aims to assist the Spanish financial system in its response to European criteria in terms of mortgage sustainability. At Banca March we are very proud to have been pioneers in this type of guarantee, which confirms our firm commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency".
