Banca March and the Mallorca Preservation Foundation create Mallorca's first sustainability observatory
02 June 2023 Category: Agreements
- The Mallorca Sustainability Observatory seeks to provide objective information and reliable data on the environmental situation in Mallorca.
- The creation of the observatory was possible thanks to the recent agreement between March A.M. and the Mallorca Preservation Foundation, under which the Banca March Group's asset management business will donate part of the annual management fee from its sustainable Mediterranean Fund.
- The agreement has a duration of three years. At the end of each year, the observatory will prepare a report outlining the key trends and progress made in Mallorca towards complying with some of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
- Mediterranean Fund is a themed, socially responsible fund managed by March A.M. which invests in two high-potential trends: the ocean economy and water. The fund donates 10% of its management fee to projects related to these two themes.
Banca March and the Mallorca Preservation Foundation have joined forces to create Mallorca's first sustainability observatory, the Mallorca Sustainability Observatory, which will seek to improve on the current knowledge of Mallorca's sustainability status by compiling and analysing a series of environmental data and indicators.
The creation of the observatory was facilitated by the recent agreement between March A.M., the Banca March Group's asset management business, and the Mallorca Preservation Foundation. Under the agreement, March A.M. will donate part of the annual management fee from its sustainable Mediterranean Fund to the Foundation to help it undertake its activities and achieve its goals.
The three-year agreement includes the preparation of an annual report outlining the key trends and progress made in Mallorca towards complying with some of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
The Mallorca Sustainability Observatory will be headed up by a coordinator who will study the environmental indicators, publish the information and prepare the annual report, among other roles, and a team of six scientists and technicians who will help define the indicators to be analysed.
Ana Riera, Executive Director of Mallorca Preservation, said: "The Mallorca Sustainability Observatory is a crucial milestone in the protection and conservation of our island. This initiative is intended to keep the public well-informed and improve our knowledge and understanding of Mallorca's current sustainability status. We are grateful to Banca March for its cooperation and support on this project, which is crucial to ensuring the sustainable long-term development of our beloved island."
Mediterranean Fund: a sustainable, socially responsible fund
Mediterranean Fund is a themed, sustainable, socially responsible fund by March A.M. which invests in two key sectors that are expected to outpace global economic growth: the ocean economy and water. This themed equity fund donates 10% of its management fee to projects related to these two areas. Year to date, Mediterranean Fund has posted a return of 5.43%. The accumulated return at three years stands at 57.21%.
Mediterranean Fund manager Íñigo Colomo said: "The socially-responsible component of the Mediterranean Fund, which donates 10% of its management fee to projects for the conservation and recovery of marine ecosystems, allows us to roll out initiatives which are much needed and closely aligned with the fund's philosophy, such as the creation of Mallorca's first sustainability observatory."
This initiative with Mallorca Preservation to create the Mallorca Sustainability Observatory is the latest in a series of partnerships with organisations working on various environmental projects:
- The recently-extended agreement with the Palma Aquarium Foundation to work together on the Seahorse Project, a project aimed at preserving the biodiversity of the Mediterranean through the reproduction of the seahorse.
- The agreement with the Oceanogràfic Foundation to finance the Posidònia Project, which aims to marine biodiversity in three areas located in the region of Valencia.
- The agreement with Reforest Project, which financed the Salva Mares Expedition to collect floating plastics and converts them into polyester fibre to make blankets for the homeless.
