Thomas Houseago. Sculptures. Banca March Garden.
Start of main content
Janus combines two techniques: carving and casting. The main body is carved from red cedar with a chainsaw, following lines of colored pastel sketched directly onto the wood.
The double plaster face that gives the work its title is attached to the body yet remains slightly detached, as if body and mind could not be fully reconciled. The sculpture thus evokes the inherent dual condition of existence.
