“As a sculptor, I am trying to put thought and energy into an inert material and give it truth and form, and I believe there is nothing more profound than achieving that” (Thomas Houseago).
Sculptures at the Banca March Gardens in Madrid marks Thomas Houseago’s first exhibition in Spain. The exhibition brings together seven large-scale outdoor sculptures that reflect the artist’s enduring commitment to representing the human figure in its contemporary condition.
Houseago’s work draws on a wide range of references, from Antiquity to Rodin, Brancusi, Giacometti, and Picasso, while also engaging with figures from popular culture, from David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust to George Lucas’s Darth Vader. His practice is defined by processes of deconstruction and recombination, multiplying cultural references as well as materials, viewpoints, scales, and dimensions. Through this layered approach, Houseago addresses the persistence of humanity within a fragmented, technocratic, and conflicted world.
Houseago creates monumental works that openly reveal their process of making. Frequently incomplete, broken, or hollow, his figures and masks convey both vulnerability and resistance. Their scale allows them to shape and activate space, engaging the viewer directly, while their fragility lends them emotional and existential depth.
Our commitment to art and culture is one of the pillars of the identity of the Banca March Group and is reflected in decades of support for a wide range of initiatives of proven cultural value. This vocation is rooted in our philosophy of Shared Growth, a vision through which we seek to generate a positive and lasting impact that goes beyond economic return.
Since our origins, we have strived to create social value in a manner that is respectful of the environment. We believe that growth should be shared with our clients, employees, shareholders and society as a whole. For this reason, our support for culture is grounded in the conviction that the most meaningful works are those that endure-those that, through dialogue and reflection, help us grow both as individuals and as a society.
True to this principle, we have always sought to bring value where there is less institutional presence, contributing a distinctive perspective and aiming to enrich the cultural and artistic landscape of our country in a singular and meaningful way.
Thomas Houseago (Leeds, UK, 1972) is one of the most prominent contemporary sculptors of his generation. He studied at Central Saint Martins in London in the early 1990s, and later at De Ateliers in Amsterdam.
After spending several years in Brussels, he moved to Los Angeles, where he has lived and worked since 2004.
His work has been exhibited internationally at major institutions, including TANK Shanghai, China (2023); the Centre Pompidou-Metz, France (2022); the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2019); the Royal Academy, London (2019); the Galleria Borghese, Rome (2013); the Storm King Art Center, New York (2013); and Inverleith House, Edinburgh (2011).
